UK Budget 2025: A Complete Breakdown of Why It Makes Zero Sense

(aka: I tried not to rant… but here we are)
Ok… I’ve taken the night so I don’t rant too much, but honestly? This Budget has left me scratching my head.
I genuinely cannot understand the logic of it, and yet, with this government… I can. What we saw this week doesn’t support growth, it doesn’t encourage work and it definitely does not reward the people who actually build this country.
Instead, it does the one thing you should never do in a fragile economy…
It stifles ambition, punishes entrepreneurship and discourages anyone trying to get ahead.
And that’s the part that gets me, who is thinking this stuff up?
With what logic?
In what universe does any of this equal “growth”?
Let’s break down exactly what they’ve done, in plain English with actual specifics… and by the way I give an optimistic view at the bottom… YES
Fiscal Drag on Steroids (and nobody voted for this)
The government has frozen tax thresholds for years into the future.
What does that mean in real life?
You get a small pay rise
Or your business earns a bit more
Or inflation pushes wages up (as it always does)
And suddenly, you’re in a higher tax band.
It’s a tax rise without them admitting it’s a tax rise…A stealth tax. Quiet. Sneaky. Effective.
This affects:
workers
business owners
company directors
self-employed people
Basically, anyone who earns anything from honest effort. And let’s be clear, this doesn’t hit “the rich.”
This affects normal people.
Attacks on Investment & Property (aka: why build anything here?)
The Budget introduces:
Dividend tax is rising by +2 percentage points
From the next tax year:
Basic rate dividend tax: 8.75% → 10.75%
Higher rate dividend tax: 33.75% → 35.75%
Additional rate dividend tax: 39.35% → approx. 41.35%
So if you take money from your own company? You now pay more tax for doing so.
Rental income & savings income tax is also rising by +2 percentage points
Basic rate: 20% → 22%
Higher rate: 40% → 42%
Additional rate: 45% → 47%
If you’re a landlord or you receive any savings interest? You now get taxed more, instantly reducing margins and profitability.
A brand-new “mansion tax” on homes over £2m
This starts in April 2028:
Properties £2m–£2.5m → £2,500/year surcharge
Properties up to £5m+ → up to £7,500/year
This is on top of normal council tax. Not instead of. On top of.
The message is loud and clear:
“Don’t bother investing here. Build your future somewhere else.”
It’s unbelievable, if you want people to invest in housing, in businesses, in long-term growth…you don’t do this.
Crushing small businesses and directors
SMEs make up 99% of UK businesses. They employ the majority of the private sector. They are the backbone of this country.
So what does the Budget do to help them?
In fact, it does the opposite.
Higher tax on dividends
As above, 2 percentage points more across the board.
This directly affects company directors who pay themselves through dividends, which is practically every SME director in the UK.
Higher tax on property income
This affects:
landlords
serviced accommodation operators
small portfolio owners
anyone who diversified into property to create security
Threshold freezes
Because income bands aren’t rising with inflation, more business owners will fall into:
higher tax brackets
higher corporation tax pain
higher marginal deductions
Less incentive to hire
If profit is taxed more…and taking that profit out of your own company is also taxed more…
Why would any business want to employ anyone or expand in that manner?
This then directly affects employment and opportunity for those wanting.
And the consequence? People are leaving. In droves.
This is already happening. Hundreds of thousands of people have left the UK, year after year.
Even more plan to leave, and this was before the Budget.
And honestly? I don’t blame them.
Why stay in a country where success is treated like a threat?
Where building something is punished?
Where taking risks becomes pointless?
This Budget doesn’t strengthen the UK…It accelerates the brain drain.
This Isn’t About Left or Right… It’s About LOGIC
This isn’t a political rant.
This is a business owner’s frustration. This is from someone who genuinely wants people to do well.
Because it feels like we’re watching decisions made by a government that:
doesn’t understand how SMEs operate
doesn’t grasp how investment works
doesn’t see long-term consequences
doesn’t value entrepreneurship
doesn’t incentivise growth in any meaningful way
A strong UK economy cannot be built by squeezing the very people who generate its wealth.
We deserve better…The UK deserves better.
And Here’s the Optimistic Reality (Yes, There Is One)
Now for the part people forget:
Waiting for any government to fix your life, your income, your business or your future is a losing game.
They won’t. They never have. And this Budget proves it.
But here’s the good news…
Opportunity doesn’t disappear, it just shifts.
In every downturn…In every bad policy cycle…In every “what on earth are they doing?” moment…
There are people who:
spot gaps
adapt faster
solve problems
take advantage of markets others are too scared to enter
build businesses when everyone else complains
grow when others freeze
invest when others retreat
The most successful people I know didn’t win because of government policy. They won in spite of it.
The smart ones will pivot. The brave ones will act.
The frustrated ones (like all of us right now) will still find a way, because we always do.
There is ALWAYS opportunity out there. Not controlled by governments. Not restricted by budgets. Not cancelled by tax hikes.
If anything, chaos creates more opportunity.
And the people who stay alert, stay adaptable and stay ambitious will thrive, regardless of what’s happening in Westminster.
So yes, this Budget is madness.
But it doesn’t get to decide your future.
You do.

Zoe’s Law Update: A Landmark Moment at Prime Minister’s Questions

Yesterday marked a day we’ll never forget.
After more than four and a half years of meetings, campaigning, and persistence, Zoe’s Law was brought right to the heart of government.
During Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs), Ben Goldsborough MP (South Norfolk) stood and delivered Zoe’s story to the Prime Minister himself, powerfully, compassionately, and with conviction and we’re so thankful to him for this. The Prime Minister responded personally, committing to a meeting to move Zoe’s Law forward that very day.
That same afternoon, we sat down in a private meeting with the Health Minister, the Head of NHS Pathology, and other senior leaders across the NHS and UK health policy. For something we’ve fought so long to achieve, it felt incredible to see it happen, all in one day!
For me and my family, this wasn’t just another step in a campaign. It was something deeply personal as I hope all know by now.
Zoe’s Law was born out of loss — losing my sister Zoe at just 26 changed everything. It also gave us purpose: to make sure no other family faces the same failures, and that Zoe’s story becomes a catalyst for lasting change in patient safety and healthcare accountability.
We really couldn’t believe the outcome of yesterday and can only thank our local MP Richard Quigley and Ben Goldsborough for getting us there on the day.
What’s Already Changed Since Zoe’s Passing
I feel it’s important to note what’s already changed since Zoe’s passing in 2020, as the UK has moved forward significantly and we know part of this is from Zoe’s law along with other special people within the UK. The systems in place in 2020 designed to protect patients simply failed her, and they failed us. But since then, change has begun.
Here’s what’s already happened/happening across the UK:
Jess’s Law – Introduced this year, this legislation ensures that if a patient visits their GP three times with the same symptoms and no diagnosis, they must be referred for further investigation. It’s a major step forward in accountability and early diagnosis, the exact kind of safeguard Zoe’s Law calls for: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/jessica-bradys-legacy-inspires-new-life-saving-gp-safety-rule
Improved Pathology Oversight – Pathology imaging cameras have been introduced across GP practices nationwide, allowing clearer tracking of samples and fewer errors. This single improvement could save lives through earlier, more reliable results.
Enhanced NHS Testing Procedures – Where patients have skin tag/mole removals through NHS procedures, samples are routinely tested to prevent oversights. It’s a small but vital step in ensuring better patient outcomes.
These advancements show that advocacy, awareness, and persistence work. They prove that Zoe’s Law, Jess’s Law and the voices behind it, are driving real progress.
How to Build Confidence When Pitching to Investors

Building Confidence When Pitching to Investors
Most people don’t fail to raise money because their idea is bad. They fail because they walk into the room nervous, underselling themselves, and treating the pitch like a favour.
Want to know the reality? Investors don’t just invest in numbers. They invest in you!
The Three Shifts That Change Everything:
Stop asking for money…start offering opportunity
You’re not begging for funding. You’re giving someone the chance to be part of something that grows and creates impact.
Confidence beats complexity
No investor expects you to have every answer in the room. What they do expect is calm, clarity, and conviction.
Impact matters as much as ROI
For me, it’s personal. Zoe’s Law taught me that business has to stand for something bigger than profit. The same applies to your pitch. If you can link the numbers to a purpose that matters, you’ll stand out.
Why This Is Just the Start
These shifts will already change the way you pitch. But the real confidence comes from how you prepare, how you structure your ask, and how you handle pressure in the room.
That’s the stuff I work on with founders I mentor…because no blog can replace focused 1:1 practice.
Final Thought:
When you’re in front of an investor, remember they’re not just deciding on your numbers. They’re deciding on you. Stand behind what you’re building, and they’ll feel it.
I mentor entrepreneurs, investors, and business owners who want to scale with confidence, without over-complicating things. If you’re serious about growth, building structure, and pitching with conviction, let’s talk.
When Is the Best Time to Sell Your Home in the UK?

“When’s the best time to sell my house?”
One of the most common questions I hear in property.
Timing matters more than most people think. But it’s not always what people assume.
Why Summer Isn’t the Golden Window
Many homeowners assume summer is the prime time to sell, the weather’s better, gardens look great, people are out and about. But in reality, July and August are some of the quietest months for property sales across the UK.
Why?
Because buyers are distracted. Families are on holiday, kids are off school, and weekends are spent at BBQs or beaches, not at viewings. The major national portals data consistently shows a dip in sales agreed over the peak summer holiday period.
The Boxing Day & January Surge
Selling homes, you want momentum and the market really comes alive at the end of December into January.
Boxing Day is one of the busiest days of the year on property portals, with Rightmove reporting a 200%+ spike in traffic compared to an average December day.
Why?
Buyers start browsing with intent… “new year, new start” plays a big part.
Separations (unfortunately) play a part also in January
January consistently records some of the highest levels of enquiries and agreed sales.
This makes December a smart time to prepare your home for market, ready to catch that surge over the festive period.
The Power of Spring
The other big peak? Spring…particularly March and April.
This is when:
Homes show at their best with lighter evenings and blooming gardens.
Families looking to move before the school summer holidays or by the time they start next term of school start their search.
Overall optimism is higher, which naturally fuels buyer confidence.
Zoopla’s market analysis has shown March is often the busiest month of the year for agreed sales, year after year.
Does Timing Really Matter?
Yes…but not as much as preparation.
A well-presented, realistically priced home will sell in any market. The key is:
Accurate pricing – Buyers are savvy these days. Overprice and you’ll lose the best opportunity to sell (your first 8 weeks).
Quality marketing – Honest photography (no wide-angle misleading nonsense), strong online presence, and detailed listings make all the difference.
The right agent – You don’t just want someone who gives you the best (lowest fee) and lists it online and waits. A proactive agent will push, chase, and negotiate hard for you.
Too often, sellers obsess over finding the cheapest commission. In reality, you get what you pay for. A proactive, skilled agent can save you months of stress and thousands of pounds.
My Thoughts…
So, when’s the best time to sell your home in the UK?
End of December (before boxing day)
Spring (March–April)
But the real answer is: the best time is when you’re ready. Selling a home is a big decision, and the right time is whenever the right time is for you. My best advice would be focussing on using the RIGHT agent, and stop focusing on fees. Find out how much reach they have on socials, what portals they use, how does their team work together (or not), what their average selling times are, what their average percentage of asking price is and this will give you the best chance at selling and make/save you thousands alongside the stress.

When Is the Best Time to Sell Your Home on the Isle of Wight?

It’s one of the questions I hear most often as an agent on the Island
“When’s the best time to put my home on the market?”
Most people assume the answer is obvious. I tend to hear:
“Oh, July and August must be the best time, the Island is packed, loads of visitors are about.”
It sounds logical, but the reality is very different.
Why Summer Isn’t the Golden Window Here
The Isle of Wight is a holiday destination. July and August are peak tourist months, but not peak property months.
While you might get plenty of enquiries or casual viewings, serious buyers are usually distracted. Families are on holiday, schools are out, and people are focused on enjoying the summer. Actual offers and transactions slow down.
So despite the buzz, summer is often one of the quietest times for real sales activity on the Island.
The Real Peak: December & January
The first 8 weeks of your marketing are so important, so you want momentum, the busiest period for the Island is often December into January.
Here’s why:
New Year, New Start – People use January as the moment to take action on the changes they’ve been thinking about. Moving home is one of them.
Festive reflection – Over Christmas, families often realise they need more space, or conversely, that their home is now too big and it’s time to downsize.
Life changes – Unfortunately, separations are more common in January, which creates demand for multiple properties.
And it’s not just anecdotal. Boxing Day is one of the busiest days of the year on property portals, Rightmove state boxing day has 200%+ more hits than any other day in December, with traffic spiking significantly compared to the weeks before. Serious buyers are out there, scrolling and planning their next move.
The Easter/Spring Market
The second key period is Easter and the spring months.
Homes look their best – longer days and brighter weather make photos and viewings more appealing.
Families planning ahead – Parents who want to move before the school summer holidays typically start their search in spring.
Confidence in the market – There’s a natural sense of optimism as the year moves forward, which translates into action.
For Isle of Wight sellers, spring also brings interest from mainland buyers who see the Island as a lifestyle move, they’re far more likely to visit when the weather improves.
Does Timing Really Matter?
Yes…but not as much as people think.
While Boxing Day/January and Easter/spring are the busiest windows, the truth is a well-prepared home, sensibly priced and marketed properly, will sell at any time of year.
The bigger questions are:
Is the price realistic for today’s market?
Are the photos and details honest and appealing?
Do you have a proactive agent who actively works your sale, or one who just lists it and waits?
Too often, sellers focus on finding the cheapest commission. In my experience (proven statistically), you get what you pay for. A proactive agent who communicates, markets hard, and drives momentum is worth far more than saving a fraction on the fee.
Final Thought
So, when is the best time to sell your home on the Isle of Wight?
Boxing Day into January – when demand spikes.
Easter/spring – when homes look their best and families plan moves.
But ultimately, the best time is when you’re ready. With the right preparation, marketing, and agent, your home will find a buyer.

Is Pride Sabotaging Your Growth?

Pride is often seen as a positive force in business. It fuels confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of leadership. But when left unchecked, pride can quietly hold you back, stopping you from seeing opportunities, embracing feedback, and making the decisions that will actually move you forward.
A recent conversation with a client really drove this home for me. They shared how they had struggled to accept feedback because it felt like a personal criticism of their leadership, also a local business owner I witnessed who can’t see it in themselves. This wasn’t about arrogance…it was about pride getting in the way of growth. And the more I thought about it, the more I realised how common this is.
Pride, when taken too far, can blind leaders to the very things that could help them succeed. It creates an invisible ceiling…one that limits perspective, slows progress, and damages relationships.
So, how does this happen? Here are five ways pride could be limiting your success…and what you can do about it.
1. Resistance to Feedback: The Silent Growth Killer
No one likes criticism. But when pride takes over, even constructive feedback feels like a personal attack. Instead of seeing feedback as a tool for improvement, many leaders see it as a challenge to their authority or expertise.
Yet, research has shown that companies that actively seek feedback and foster a culture of learning outperform those that don’t. A study from Zenger & Folkman found that leaders who ask for and act on feedback are rated 86% more effective by their employees (source).
If you struggle to accept feedback, ask yourself:
What if this person is right?
What opportunities am I missing by ignoring this?
Am I resisting feedback because of ego, or because I genuinely disagree?
The moment you start separating feedback from personal identity, you unlock a whole new level of growth.
2. Fear of Vulnerability: Why Leaders Struggle to Ask for Help
Many business owners and leaders feel pressure to always have the answers. They believe that admitting a mistake or asking for help is a sign of weakness. But in reality, it’s the opposite.
Some of the most successful people in the world actively seek out help and mentorship. They surround themselves with advisors, peers, and experts who challenge their thinking and push them forward.
If you never ask for help, you risk:
Making avoidable mistakes because you didn’t seek advice
Slowing down your progress by trying to figure everything out alone
Burning out by carrying more than you need to
The best leaders don’t go it alone…they build strong support systems and know when to reach out.
3. Stagnation from Perfectionism: The Illusion of ‘Not Ready Yet’
Pride and perfectionism often go hand in hand. Leaders with high standards (which is a good thing) can sometimes become paralysed by the fear of launching something imperfect (which is a bad thing).
You tell yourself:
“I’ll do it when it’s perfect.”
“It’s not quite ready yet.”
“I need more time.”
But the reality? Perfectionism is often just fear in disguise. The longer you wait, the more momentum you lose.
Research suggests that 92% of people fail to achieve their goals, often because they overanalyse or delay starting due to fear of failure.
Success isn’t about getting it perfect…it’s about getting it started.
4. Limited Perspective: The Danger of Thinking ‘My Way is the Only Way’
Pride convinces leaders that their way is the best way…but in business, that kind of thinking can kill innovation.
The best ideas often come from outside perspectives…from employees, peers, mentors, or even customers. If you shut down new ideas because they don’t align with your way of thinking, you could be missing out on game-changing opportunities.
Neuroscience research suggests that leaders who expose themselves to diverse perspectives enhance cognitive flexibility and decision-making skills (source).
The fix? Stay curious. Actively seek out different perspectives. Challenge yourself to see things through someone else’s lens…because that’s often where the biggest breakthroughs happen.
5. Strained Relationships: When Pride Creates Distance
A leader who always needs to be right is a leader who will struggle to build trust.
When pride gets in the way, relationships suffer. Employees stop speaking up, business partners hold back ideas, and clients feel unheard. Over time, this creates a culture where collaboration is weak, communication is guarded, and progress slows down.
Leaders who demonstrate humility are more effective at building high-performing teams.
The most influential leaders aren’t the ones who force their opinions…they’re the ones who listen, adapt, and bring people together.
How to Shift: The Power of Humility
Balancing confidence with humility is the key to real, sustainable success. The best leaders:
✔️ Embrace feedback instead of resisting it
✔️ Ask for help without fear of looking weak
✔️ Take action instead of waiting for perfection
✔️ Stay open to new perspectives
✔️ Lead with curiosity, not ego
Pride won’t grow your business. Humility will.
Final Thoughts
Pride is tricky…it feels like strength, but when it’s unchecked, it can be a hidden weakness. If you recognise any of these patterns in yourself, don’t beat yourself up. Awareness is the first step. The key is to stay open, keep learning, and always be willing to grow.
At the end of the day, leadership isn’t about having all the answers…it’s about knowing when to listen, learn, and evolve.
